The Peace That Passes Understanding

The world offers many remedies for anxiety. Breathe deeply. Think positive thoughts. Focus on what you can control. These things are not without value — but they all share one limitation. They depend on you. On your discipline, your willpower, your ability to manage your own mind. And on the hardest days, that is precisely what runs out first.

God offers something entirely different. Not a technique. Not a strategy. A peace that is not of your own making and therefore cannot be undone by your own failing.

"And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."

Philippians 4:7

Transcends all understanding. That phrase is worth sitting with. This peace does not make sense. It does not require your circumstances to improve before it arrives. It does not wait for the problem to be solved. It comes — inexplicably, supernaturally — in the middle of the storm. And when it comes, it stands guard. Like a soldier at the door of your heart, it keeps out what would otherwise destroy you.

How do you receive it? Paul tells us in the verse just before.

"Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God."

Philippians 4:6

Prayer. Petition. Thanksgiving. Not a formula — a posture. Come to God honestly, with your need, with gratitude for who He already is. And the peace that passes understanding will come.

Lord, I cannot manufacture peace on my own today. I have tried. So I come to You honestly — here is what I am carrying, here is what I am afraid of, here is what I cannot figure out. I lay it before You with thanksgiving, because You are good and You are able. Let Your peace, the peace that makes no earthly sense, guard my heart right now. In Jesus's name. Amen.

Amen.

May His peace go with you today.
